Overview
Beyond the 4 Walls is a podcast brand concept centred on conversations about education in Nigeria, including policy, development, institutions, access, innovation and the realities shaping the education ecosystem.
The identity needed to communicate the idea of moving beyond traditional classroom boundaries while remaining credible enough for serious conversations and approachable enough for a younger audience.
The brief
Create a recognisable podcast identity that can:
- Communicate the idea behind the name immediately.
- Feel intelligent and contemporary.
- Work across digital media and social platforms.
- Avoid generic microphone or academic-logo clichés.
- Extend naturally into merchandise and event materials.
- Remain recognisable at different sizes.
The creative idea
The identity is built around one central thought:
Education should not be confined by the four walls of a classroom.
The number 4 becomes the key visual device.
The brick-wall treatment reinforces the idea of a boundary while the typography pushes the wording beyond that boundary conceptually and visually.
This creates a mark with a story behind it rather than a purely decorative symbol.
Design decisions
The “4” as the hero
Rather than relying on a conventional microphone, speech bubble or graduation-cap symbol, the identity makes the number 4 the memorable asset.
This directly connects the mark to the brand name.
Brick-wall treatment
The wall texture creates a visual metaphor for limitation, convention and boundaries.
It can also be reused as a supporting graphic language for episode artwork and promotional assets.
Strong typography
“Beyond the Walls” remains highly legible and visually dominant so the identity can still work when the illustrative 4 is simplified.
Restrained colour system
Black and white provide flexibility, while the red 4 becomes the visual point of emphasis.
This gives the identity a recognisable accent without creating a complicated palette.
Brand applications
The identity was explored across:
- Hoodie
- Tote bag
- Notebook
- Bottle
- Social/digital applications
These applications test whether the idea survives outside the logo itself.
Why we designed it this way
A media brand about education needs to live in two worlds:
Serious conversation and accessible culture.
The visual system therefore avoids conventional institutional branding in favour of a conceptual symbol that can feel more contemporary across podcasting, social media, events and merchandise.
What this project demonstrates
Beyond the 4 Walls demonstrates Fortsrex’s ability to develop a visual identity from a clear brand idea, then extend that idea into tangible and digital applications.
Outcome
This is an independent branding project. It is presented as a design exploration and does not claim audience, sponsorship or podcast-performance results.
